One of the hardest things about being a pet owner is losing our companions. And one of the toughest things about being close to someone who has lost a pet is knowing what to say.
The traditional, “I’m sorry” is always a safe bet but here are some other comforting words as well as what NOT to say.
- Don't Say: “It’s not like you lost a child.” Our furry friends become our family and for many, they take the place of kids, especially for those who can’t have children.
- Do Say:“I know you miss (name) very much. They were very much a part of your family. “
- Don't Say:“It was their time. They were old.” They already know that.
- Do Say:“(name) had a wonderful life with you.”
- Don't Say:“It was just a dog/cat/etc.” To those who are grieving their fuzzy friend was much more than that.
- Do Say:“(name) was a wonderful companion to you.”
- Don't Say:: “When are you getting another animal?”When a pet owner loses an animal they cared deeply about it could be months or even years before they are ready for another.
- Do Say:“(name) will be greatly missed.”
- Don't Say::“Get over it.” That’s just going to make someone angry.
- Do Say:“Grief takes time to work through. I’m here for support if you want to talk, cry, etc.”
- Don't Say:“I know how you feel.” Maybe you do, but it’s not comforting.
- Do Say:“I understand you are hurting. Tell me more about (name).”
- Don't Say:“They are in a better place.” While you may believe that to be true, we believe the best place is with us.
- Do Say:“You did everything you could to make (name)’s life amazing right up until the end. It’s hard and very painful to let them go.”
- Don't Say:“Well at least you have plenty of other animals to take care of.” We know that. But Rex isn’t the same as Lucy.
- Do Say:“(name) will be very missed by everyone, including your other animals.”
